Babysitting guidelines

Updated: Mar 3, 2020

Babysitters in the UK are not regulated. They do not need to be registered by OFSTED, or to have any childcare related qualifications.

There is no law stating when a young person is old enough to babysit. If you decide to use a babysitter who is under 16yrs old and your child is injured in their care, you may be held responsible and deemed negligent. NSPCC and ROSPA recommend that babysitters should be over 16 years old. It is the parents responsibility to decide if the babysitter is responsible enough to look after their children

Parents must feel confident that they are leaving their children in the care of somebody who is able to deal appropriately with any difficulties that could arise. Parents need to know that their babysitter is a responsible, competent person and can respond appropriately to an emergency.

Therefore, by using Savernake Nannies you know that the vetting process has already taken place. The registration process is exactly the same for a nanny as a babysitter: DBS & paediatric first aid certificates are checked aswell as following up 2 references. We meet all our babysitters in a face to face registration interview enabling us to get to know them.

If time allows we also recommend meeting your babysitter before hand and introducing them to the children so that you can observe how they interact.

Savernake Nannies insist on meeting all families before babysitters are placed with them. This is to safeguard the babysitter & the children.

We provide a babysitting chart for parents to fill in that contains information such as where parents are going , contact tel. numbers etc… as well as a consent form for medicines should the need arise.

We also provide the babysitters with a handover sheet which they fill in. This contains information such as tel. messages, if the child woke up, if the child required medicine etc…

All babysitters are reminded by the agency that no reference to them looking after the children is allowed on social media and no friends are allowed to accompany them unless agreed by the parents before hand. PLEASE NOTE that the agency can’t vouch for any friends accompanying the babysitter booked through them

As a nice gesture the majority of families leave snacks out for the babysitter or inform them what they are welcome to help themselves to.

£10phg is the current babysitting rate in our area

£100g per 12hour overnight rate as they are still "on duty"

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information included in this article is accurate at the point of release this should not be relied upon as legal advice. It is the opinion of Savernake Nannies. Copyright 2019
