Whilst on holiday in France I saw an advert outside the local shop for a babysitter. Now my French isn't too good but I could translate the advert : Basically a 14 year old girl advertising her services to local holiday makers. ALARM bells rang instantly ……
We also see young girls advertising on facebook groups locally. Now don't get me wrong, I babysat at this age too. (MANY years ago !!)
As a mother I employed a 16yr old babysitter once to look after my children ,then aged 8yrs and 10yrs old. We returned home to be told everything was absolutely fine and both fast asleep. It wasn't until the following morning the eldest asked how the youngest was as apparently he'd fallen off the sofa and bumped his head. Now I m not blaming the babysitter but the knowledge possibly wasn't there to think about the implications of a head injury but it brought it home to me how important it is to get a babysitter who has first aid knowledge and some experience.
So when we get asked why our babysitters charge more than the girl next door, the answer's simple : All our babysitters are experienced nannies who have paediatric first aid ,DBS checked and have childcare qualifications/experience. They are responsible and knowledgeable. This is their profession
Another very important aspect to consider is the babysitters safety: A 14yr old advertising themselves on a noticeboard is opening themselves up to a false booking- not even worth thinking about.
Savernake Nannies never send a babysitter to a family unless we have met the family first. We meet at the home/hotel and collect details about the family. We care about the safety of our nannies/babysitters.
We hand out a babysitting chart to all families, for which we've received some great positive feedback. Families like the fact that most eventualities are covered and the babysitters like them as they have all the info at hand in one place.
Safety for both the children and the nannies is our main priority.
